MEDIA RELEASE 23 June 2012
Tonight after a heartfelt performance on his premiere visit to Australia, Ben Vereen signs on to the Decade of Lateral Love as our International Ambassador joining the likes of Troy Cassar-Daley and Jack Charles as we turn Lateral Violence into Lateral Love for the benefit of our children, our grandchildren and all future generations “People talk about love and it seems like a cliché but it’s a real thing — the more love we spread around the world the more it’s going to change lives,” Ben said.
Lateral Love & Lateral Love Australia is the culmination of the life works of William Brian Butler and his niece Nicola Butler, a memorialization and tribute to the legacy of the late Jimmy Little a wonderful, inspiring soul who by his very existence epitomized the essence of Lateral Love in every breath he shared with the world.
Ben Vereen with his legendary performances on stage and screen transcends time and are woven into the fabric of his artistic legacy. A musical autobiography of his life in showbiz, “Steppin’ Out with Ben Vereen” featured Broadway classics, songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and a very special tribute to his longtime friend and mentor, Sammy Davis, Jr. His first love and passion is and always will be the stage. “The theater was my first training ground. It taught me discipline, dedication and appreciation of hard work and values that will stay with me a lifetime. The stage sharpens the creative instrument and encourages you to go deeper inside and try new things,” states Ben.
The guests attending tonight’s performance were treated to a very special, emotionally charged evening as his son Aaron Vereen, Master Drummer of L’Acadco and graduate of NOYAM in Jamaica along with the Adelaide Art Orchestra joined him for his premiere performance here in Adelaide, South Australia featuring hit songs such as Defying Gravity, Mr. Bojangles, and Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries, it was a contemporary and timeless journey through the Broadway songbook.
Having been in show business for more than 40 years, a Tony Award winner for his role in Pippin, Vereen has appeared on Broadway in Wicked, Fosse, Chicago, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair and I’m Not Rappaport to name a few. He also starred in the mega television mini-series Roots as “Chicken George”.
His personal life has been a journey of true inspiration having overcome many trials and tribulations Ben continues to remain positive every step of the way, encouraging and inspiring us to all aim higher and dig deeper, he is truly blessed in the joy of love and life and wants nothing more than for each and every soul to have the same love for life!
We thank both Ben and Aaron Vereen for joining us on our important journey.
