Please, tell your kids: stay away from pipes and drains

THE grieving parents of Richard Baird are calling on the community to look out for each other so a similar tragedy will never needlessly claim another young life.

Richard, 8, was playing in a storm drain on Sunday afternoon with friends when rising waters caught them.

He died on Monday.

Jason Baird and wife Alison Wunungmurra had been confident to let Richard go off and play with friends – the kids were warned on drains, but the parents had no idea how accessible Palmerston’s drains could be.

“We want this story to get out to Australia and the community,” Alison said.

“We want parents to be aware and to talk about it and to keep talking about it.

“If you see kids playing in drains, don’t drive on. Get out and make sure they leave, then call someone.”

Importantly, they are asking Palmerston council to enforce more rigorous safety checks on storm drains.

Jason, who in a previous job with Gupuwiyak Council in East Arnhem Land checked drain safety, said Richard and friends should have never had such easy access.

He wants council to implement a checklist-style approach to ensure every drain is signed off “safe” before and after wet seasons.

The NT News asked Palmerston council when the drain at Contalonierie Park had been last checked and what policies were in place.

Spokeswoman Mandy Ward said council would not answer questions until police had finished their report for the coroner, a process that could take months.
