Stand Up And Lead.......We did it!
28 12 2012
Once and a while something powerful comes along to say "Stand Up And Lead" this was that time. We decided to rise up and contribute to the birth of the new humanity.
Unite the Light has evolved into what it was always going to be; A New Style Leadership Program and a Community for Social Change, this is what was born out of our UTL co-creative society.............But first we had to grow into that role and re-cognise it in ourselves.

Lateral Love Australia Song of the Week
28 12 2012Friday 28 December 2012 – Lateral Love Australia Song of the Week
What The World Needs Now (1965) … by Jackie DeShannon
Sing along with Jackie …
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone
Lord, we don’t need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last until the end of time
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone
Lord, we don’t need another meadow
There are corn fields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh, listen Lord, if You want to know
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some, oh but just for every, every, everyone
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
(Whoa, whoa, is love)
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
(Oh, oh, is love)
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
(Whoa, whoa, is love)

Sir,
Let me take you on a journey… A large number of your relatives live in community on their own property and you pay them a visit. The following scenes play out before your very eyes. I wonder what you would do ….
> a young disabled cousin (who has a dedicated carer) has indicated that she needs assistance with being helped out of her wheelchair. You carefully lift her and assist her to become comfortable; at the same time you become aware of maggots on your arms from where you have lifted her and then notice maggots on the seat of her wheelchair.
> An elderly diabetic uncle is lying ill on the ground and as you approach him family members explain that the kitchen is locked (the manager is away for a week and has not made arrangements to leave a key) and the staff who prepare the daily meals for the disabled and elderly have gone intrastate on a work conference for a week. Other elderly family members too are hungry waiting for their meal. An uncle quickly takes the appropriate steps to find food to feed these vulnerable people. The next day this same uncle uses bolt cutters to enable him entry to the kitchen to feed his sick and needy relatives. He then replaces the lock with a new one. He submits a report to the Director detailing the situation that had played out. The blame for this disgraceful state of affairs is then laid at the feet of Centrelink paid workers rather than the manager who is paid a very large salary.
> Excited chatter is emanating from a group of female family members (they work for Centrelink payments) they have just been advised of the staff Christmas lunch (as had been discussed and decided at a senior staff meeting). As these low paid workers read on they discover they will have to travel approx 200km to the chosen venue (company vehicles will be made available for this). The email went on to say that “All staff will be responsible for paying for the meal, drinks and accommodation. I realise this may change some peoples intentions of attending. To help you make the decision I have outlined the cost of the meal 3 course buffet style, all you can eat $60 per head. $25 for children. Free for children under 3, or their normal menu which starts from about $15. Accommodation: cabins – basic $60 for two people. $50 for one person. Motel room: $155 for two people. Camping available: sleeping on the grass is an option if people don’t have tent/swags $7.50 per person.” This, I know is hard for you to believe however, you have a copy in writing from management of the email detailing the above and so you know it to be true.
> An uncle who is well respected and trusted is the only family member with a full time job in the entire community (he has a contract). He attempts on numerous occasions to bring to the attention of the appropriate authorities the many hideous situations that he encounters. The end result is that his contract is not renewed, despite him being a 2012 NAIDOC Community Award recipient. There are copious other untold stories of abuse that the uncle witnessed in this community (and they are still occurring).
The community I speak of is the Aboriginal community of Mimili (as well as surrounding areas) on the APY Lands in the far north of South Australia. I have implored the help of many people over time – including the Minister, Chief Executive, Director and others from various government and private organisations – all to no avail. I have no option other than to take this diabolical situation to my fellow Australians and I urge you please to raise your voices in unison at the injustices as described above.
The white supremacist mind-set overrides any chance of positive change for Anangu. Despite over 200 years of white intervention, enormous amounts of money plied into white man’s programs that haven’t worked – anangu are still being subjected to this same soul destroying regime and their children are paying the price. Anangu must no longer be used as a source for providing employment for the wider non-anangu community. I will no longer allow anangu to suffer in silence and I am unwavering in my resolve to ensure that the progression of ‘self determination’ and ‘closing the gap’ as espoused by governments becomes a reality not idle talk or hearsay. This can only happen when Aboriginal people are “allowed” to take charge of their own destiny. They can’t do it without jobs and my people are the only people unemployed on their own lands. This has to stop. There are aboriginal people from these areas who are willing and able to train and support their own people going forward. They need REAL jobs – not Centrelink money.
Keep in mind the ‘ripple effect’ – each appointment of an Anangu person into a full time position (equivalent to the same pay of the non-Anangu counter part) – and the direct effect from these appointments is a message of hope for the future for all Anangu. A new start to eliminate the welfare dependency mentality that has been forced upon my people; thereby increasing their sense of hopelessness and ultimate failure to live life in the world in which they now find themselves. People reading this article and who have a career know that your job provides you with the opportunity to make choices in your life. You are in a position to take control of your own destiny. Wow, how powerful is that??
I have grave concerns for the wellbeing of our youth going forward. Some of these kids, as evidenced in communities across the lands and on the streets of Alice Springs, are lost in their own country; as too are their families. They can’t help themselves let alone their children as they too are suffering the same fate of being oppressed and disrespected on their own land. Daily these kids are looked down upon and judged by non-Anangu. They know it. They react to it.
Please don’t judge them and give up hope on them; they too have a right to contribute to the community, but they have to be given a chance. If every person reading this takes a minute to count their blessings and to look beyond themselves and try to put themselves in these beautiful kids’ position – your attitude might alter and positive change would happen as a result. These kids would no longer feel inferior; every child deserves to be respected not judged.
Their future is in Australia’s hands. Please advocate for real jobs with real pay for Anangu so that they can flourish and prosper in the land that was theirs originally.
George Kenmore

Idle No More movement stages national day of protest
24 12 2012National chief urges Canadians to ‘stand with us’
Idle No More movement stages national day of protest
The Canadian Press
Hundreds of First Nations protesters waved flags, chanted slogans and shook a collective fist at the federal government as they gathered on Parliament Hill to put Canada on notice they would be “idle no more.”
More than 1,000 protesters, a group stretching several city blocks, marched through the streets of the capital Friday after meeting with Theresa Spence, the chief of northern Ontario’s troubled Attawapiskat First Nation, who is on a hunger strike.
National Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo addressed the crowd, saying, “The year 2013, it harkens a moment of reckoning in this country.”
He told the young activists gathered on the Hill that they they were “the change that we’ve been waiting for” and also called on Canadians to support the growing movement and its quest for Ottawa’s recognition of aboriginal treaty rights.
“We reach out to Canadians,” Atleo said. “We want you to understand that the Department of Justice, that the federal government, that so many governments over so many years, they stand on a principle that is unacceptable.”
“Canadians, we are counting on you to stand with us and to do this now at this juncture in history,” he added.
“We are tired of having the boot put to our head,” Algonquin Chief Gilbert Whiteduck told the gathering beneath the Peace Tower under a steady barrage of snow.
“We want the government of Canada to come to the table in a spirit of unconditional openness and transparency.”
Other rallies were held in various cities across the country. Demonstrations in support of Spence’s cause also took place in the United States.
Hundreds of people briefly blocked one of the busiest intersections in Toronto in solidarity with Idle No More, a grassroots aboriginal protest movement gaining traction on social media. Several Manitoba First Nations groups also rallied at the Winnipeg International Airport, congesting traffic.
In Montreal, more than 100 supporters of Idle No More gathered peacefully in Cabot Square, while dozens of members of the Listiguj Mi’gmaq community blocked Highway 132 and slowed traffic on the interprovincial bridge that connects Quebec to the Maritimes.
Supporting treaty rights, opposing Bill C-45
Idle No More organizers oppose the Harper government’s recently passed omnibus budget legislation, Bill C-45, and accuse the Tories of trampling on treaty rights.
Julie Vaux, a spokeswoman for Harper, said the rallies did not change the government’s position. The Conservatives insist they are taking strong action to address aboriginal concerns.
As recently as Nov. 28, Harper and Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan met with Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo and others to review progress to date and discuss a range of issues, Vaux said.
“Our government hosted an historic gathering of the Crown and First Nations this past January,” she also noted.
“Since then, the government has been working with First Nations leadership to make progress in several areas, most notably education and infrastructure on reserve.”
For First Nations people, however, that progress has been far from enough.
And many see Spence as a warrior standing up for all Canadians.
Hunger strike ‘warrior’
Spence has been on a hunger strike since Dec. 11, living in a tipi on an island in the Ottawa River that many aboriginals consider to be sacred land. Atleo met with her Friday and said she appeared weak from 10 days of ingesting mainly water and fish broth.
Atleo joined demands for the government to intervene on Spence’s hunger strike and highlighted her importance in the Idle No More movement.
“We know who is leading this movement. It is the women,” Atleo told the crowd in Ottawa. “And so men, when a woman like Chief Spence says it is time to work together, it is time to be unified, it is time to be idle no more, we better listen.”
Shelly Young, an aboriginal activist from Nova Scotia, wept during a panel discussion Friday in Halifax as she spoke of how Spence is inspiring others.

“I think sometimes we have to do the extreme to get the attention of the government, because they’re ignoring us.”
Atleo told CBC News Friday evening that he had not yet received a reply from the Prime Minster’s Office about meeting with Spence.
Protesters in Nova Scotia also held a peaceful demonstration along Highway 102 in the Truro area, causing about eight kilometres of traffic gridlock.
The Canadian Auto Workers and civil service unions across the country have also shown support for the movement, saying they stand in solidarity with First Nations in a struggle against Bill C-45.
Spence did not take part in the Ottawa rally, but on Thursday, she wrote to Harper and Gov. Gen. David Johnston, urging them to start a national discussion about poverty in First Nations communities.

-
- Jack earned the title of 2012 Young South Australia of the Year for his efforts in preserving the Kaurna language and teaching others
-
- Language and dance is integral to preserving culture and Jack is doing all he can to ensure that more people learn the Kaurna language
-
- Through performing Traditional Welcome to Countries in Kaurna, more people are able to learn and share in his Kaurna culture
-
- “My name is Vincent Buckskin but my family named me Jack after my grandfather’s father.’The rock’ is my Kaurna name given to me and newly derived ‘father of the black swan’ from my daughter”
-
- “In 2006 I started learning my language, Kaurna, and now I teach to my family and to all other people”
-
- “I am Kaurna through my grandmother and my grandfather’s father was Wirangu and his mother was Narungga so I am a proud Kaurna/Narungga and Wirangu man, although I lived in Adelaide my family grew up on Point Pearce mission and in the Riverland”
-
- Jack is working with Dr Rob Amery, a linguist from the University of Adelaide to encourage more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to learn their languages
-
- Jack’s goal is that everyone who lives on Kaurna land in Adelaide and the surrounding regions will one day be able to speak at least a few words of the Kaurna language
-
- Suzie D Wilson and her Band ‘The Cool Mints’ sang up a storm of Lateral Love throughout the evening with a call for all to find their passions, your light and your humanity.
-
- Our website http://www.lateralloveaustralia.com is one way that we are getting as much information out about Lateral Love and Lateral Violence as we can
-
- My mother Emily Anne (born Annie Lawrie) and my grandmother Eliza Gordon (born Lady Wilson) are of the Aranda tribe and my grandfather Toby is of the Luritja tribe from the Uluru and Areyonga areas
-
- Brian Butler sharing the Decade of Lateral Love around the World 2012 – 2022, with the Rainbow Serpent Map in the background. The Aranda and Luritja Language Groups highlighted in Green
-
- There were originally over 670 different Aboriginal language groups within Australia’s mainland and waterways, all speaking their own language with dialect inside those language groups
-
- “My story begins right back in the early 1900’s or perhaps a bit further than that. My grandmother, Eliza Gordon (pictured in the middle) was just a young girl at the time, and from a very young age she was used by the police troopers”
-
- “Forced to assist them in finding all of the children of mixed relationships between Aboriginal women and the pastoralists and miners out from Altunga in the goldfields, the railway workers and all those non-Aboriginal people that came to Alice Springs for various government work”
-
- The stories that she [Nanna Eliza] told us were about how she was forced by the police troopers to ride with them out around the countryside to find and locate the various Aboriginal camps and to identify and let the police know where those camps were so that they could search them for the children, all of the ‘half caste’ children
-
- A very special time in the presentation with Grandmother and Grandson sharing the stage for a rare moment
-
- For many, many, years she [Nanna Eliza] was subjected to riding at the tail of the police troopers. It was through this ordeal that she ended up with trachoma from the dust ‘sandy blight’ as it was called in those days
-
- An image of some Police Troopers from around the same time Brian’s Grandmother Eliza was used as a Tracker and Sex object
-
- The troopers failed to get her medical help when she needed it and her eyesight was severely affected because of their neglect causing her to be completely blind for the rest of her life
-
- “Not only was Nanna forced to find all the ‘half caste’ children out on their patrols, placing her in an extremely vulnerable position regarding her perceived loyalty to her people, she was also used as their sex object, the troopers’ sex slave as well”
-
- Arltunga, Brian’s Mother and Grandmother’s homelands where they were taken from and forced into Detention Centres and Missions
-
- A current picture of the creekbed where Nanna Eliza birthed her first born baby and was then forced to smother and bury that child by the Police Trooper

- Devoted to bringing Lateral Violence, particularly for Aboriginal & Islander peoples of Australia, into the public arena
-
- The primary focus of the ‘Decade of Lateral Love Around the World 2012 – 2022’ is to bring about equality for all of humanity through Lateral Love, Caring and Sharing in Unity
-
- The movement is based on the healing power of love as opposed to the difficult issues that are Lateral Violence
-
- Late one night we were talking on the telephone at 2am in the morning, as we often do asking what could we do to change the situation, we decided then, that what we needed to do was to approach things from another angle, so we came up with the idea of focusing on Lateral Love
-
- Since then we have continued to receive encouraging support and positive feedback along with a firm calling throughout the Nation to address Lateral Violence
-
- We are trying to get as much information out about Lateral Love and Lateral Violence as we can. We are also using the website to highlight the many positive programs and services that already exist which operate from the primary focus of Lateral Love
-
- We hope to create a network whereby people who are looking for positive services to improve their social and emotional wellbeing, can find resources and access the information they need through our website
-
- Moving in to the ‘Decade of Lateral Love around the World 2012 – 2022′ to create a better future for our children, our grandchildren and all of the generations that follow in our forefathers footsteps
-
- Initially this movement came about because of the dire situations surrounding our immediate families regarding youth suicide and Lateral Violence and the serious need for healing within our communities

On the 22nd December 2012 at The Sanctuary, Adelaide Zoo in Adelaide, South Australia, the Rise Up event celebrated and anchored the birth of a new humanity.
Unite the LIGHT – our future is now, was born out of Elizabeth Ellames passionate heart to help others identify and use their gifts to make a difference in our world.
Unite the Light has built a community of innovators, practitioners, teachers, artists, leaders, and everyday angels of compassion; a living example of the power that true unity in our communities creates.
Elizabeth, the Primary Vision Holder along with five Stellar Teams each consisting of a Vision Holder, Stellar Coordinator and complimentary team members formed in January 2012 to develop the content for last nights event. With a goal to embody unity-based principles at every level and truly serve in the transformation of humanity: for the individual, the community, and the world.
The event was designed to raise positive awareness in people, as well as raise funds for the “Because I am a Girl” campaign, which is connected to Plan International which is a development charity working with communities in 45 countries to alleviate child poverty.
Asking the questions throughout the year, Who and what does it mean to be – The New Woman, The New Man, The New Story, The New Family, The New Child, The New Business and The New Style Leader, this leading edge project created a new understanding around the power of community.
It was an honour to experience young Kaurna and Narrunga man Vincent ‘Jack’ Kanyana Buckskin performing the Traditional Welcome to Country in his native tongue of Kaurna, the Kaurna Peoples being the traditional custodians of the Adelaide and greater Adelaide plains region of South Australia.
Meet Jack Buckskin…
Yingkalityidlu ngai nari Vincent Buckskin. Ngaityu taikurtirna Jack ngai tarrki ngaityu tamamuku yarlita warta. Kanya ngai nari warrarlu kuma Kudlyuitpirna ngai kurlana nari ngaityu tukuparrkanungku.

Ngai Kaurna ngaityu kamami-arra. Ngaityu tamamuku yarlita Wirangu miyu. Kuma ngaityu tamamuku ngangkita Narungga ngangki. Namu ngai taingiwirlta Kaurna/Narungga/Wirangu miyu. Puru ngai Tarntanyangka tikanthi ngaityu taikurtirna Pukiyana yartangka kuma Pari yartangka yarthuatpathi.
My name is Vincent Buckskin but my family named me Jack after my grandfather’s father.’The rock’ is my Kaurna name given to me and newly derived ‘father of the black swan’ from my daughter.
In 2006 I started learning my language, Kaurna, and now I teach to my family and to all other people.
I am Kaurna through my grandmother and my grandfather’s father was Wirangu and his mother was Narungga so I am a proud Kaurna/Narungga and Wirangu man, although I lived in Adelaide my family grew up on Point Pearce mission and in the Riverland.
After losing his sister, Jack decided to drop everything to immerse himself in the dancing and language of his culture. After 18 months of learning the endangered Kaurna language he was proficient enough to teach it, becoming the only young Aboriginal person to do so. He now teaches more than 100 Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, aged five to 62, through high schools and language schools.
Jack also shares his culture and stories through dance by giving dance lessons at the Kaurna Plains School and fronting his traditional family dance troupe ‘Kuma Karro’ which translates to One Blood.
Jack is committed to educating the community and sharing Kaurna culture.
The Unite the Light attendees were privileged to have Jack and ‘Kuma Karro’ perform a traditional smoking ceremony and a number of their first class traditional dances as they looked on holding their ‘united lights’ (lanterns gifted by the Unite the Light ladies to all attendees at the conclusion of the event).
Sacred ceremonies, video clips, performers, and presentations by guest speakers including the renowned Brandon Bays speaking on the New Consciousness & Elder Brian Butler talking about the ‘Decade of Lateral Love around the World 2012 – 2022′ along with Mia Handshin and Khadija Gbla from ‘Because I Am A Girl’ were all captured on the night, and along with additional footage filmed throughout the year, will form the basis for a documentary and YouTube clips which are still to come.
All of humanities next phase of development will need to be imbued with Lateral Love in the light of unity. How we all contribute will be important. It is time to truly connect with each other and Unite the Light through the principles of the Decade of Lateral Love Around the World 2012 – 2022.

Shift Movement 2012
23 12 2012Letter of Invitation to the Birth 2012 Campaign

Dear Friend,
This invitation to participate in the Birth is the most important letter I have ever written.
Its intent is to present you with the greatest opportunity that humanity has ever consciously faced together: the effort to cocreate a planetary shift in time to avert global catastrophe by helping humanity cross the gap from “Here”– our current breakdowns – to “There” – our future of infinite possibility.
Why is this invitation so urgent?
Because our current condition of over-growth in our finite Earth system is simply not sustainable.
We will either evolve toward a more sustainable, compassionate, and creative global system, or we face the real possibility of devolution and destruction of our life support system and of much of life on Earth – within our own or our children’s lifetime!
This dangerous reality is motivating us to enter into what I call the first age of conscious evolution – that is, evolution by choice and not by chance. It means that we need to be causal in the actions and direction we take in this lifetime. What is being required of us is to learn to co-evolve with nature and cocreate with Spirit.
Again, why do I say that the timing is so urgent? Why now? Can’t we wait a while and see how it turns out?
No, we can’t wait.
It’s like the birth of a baby. You might not be ready, but if the baby is ready, it’s coming out now for better or for worse. It can either be a disastrous birth, or a gentle one.
We are being called to a great experiment, for no one alive on Earth knows how to make such a vast evolutionary shift in this short of a time.
For the first time in our conscious history we are being given the opportunity to guide and ease our transition to the next stage of evolution. This situation is new for humanity, for we are the first Earth species to consciously face evolution or extinction.
This condition may be new for us, but it is not novel for the universe. Evolution operates by “punctuated equilibrium,” meaning long periods of slow change that are punctuated by apparent sudden jumps.
For billions of years, nature has been going through such creative leaps. It has progressed from energy evolving into matter, to planets like our Earth, to primitive life, to animal life, to human life, and now to us going around the next turn on the Spiral of Evolution toward the next phase of humanity.
When we review this Big History, this deep-time past, we learn that certain lessons recur:
- Crises almost always precede transformation.
- Problems are evolutionary drivers.
- Nature takes jumps through greater synergy and cooperation within and among species.
- We are facing transformative crises and living through such a leap now – the great wake-up call for the maturation of humanity.
We have reached what systems theorists call a “chaos point.” When a system in chaos is far from equilibrium, it tries to right itself by going backward to the old; this is why we see reactive movements everywhere in society right now.
But an evolving system cannot return to the past. It must seek out new structures and systems, and quickly ascend to a new configuration – or else face rapid decline. Fortunately, according to the theory, small positive fluctuations in this sea of social chaos can jump the system to such a higher order.
This book is dedicated to the fact that we can each be that small fluctuation!
The opportunity now being offered to us from the sacred process of evolution is to participate in creating many positive fluctuations as pioneering souls. We are being called upon to shift from ego-centrism to living from our Essential Selves; to discover our vocations of destiny; to give our unique Gift to the Shift; to work toward maximum global coherence; and to evolve our communities, our world, and ourselves.
In other words, our opportunity, right now, is to become planetary birthing mamas and papas!
Joining together, we can “gentle the birth” of a Universal Humanity connected through the heart to the whole of life-and guide our Earth community into its next evolutionary Stage.
With love,
Barbara Marx Hubbard

19 12 2012“Love takes many forms, wears many faces, but when it’s real, when it touches your heart, you will know it and–with hope–embrace it. Love is stronger than hate, love is stronger than anger. Love is stronger than all artificial divisions that exist in our world.” ~ Yasmine Galenorn
