Highlighting the manifestations of Lateral Violence that are fueled by negative stereotypes within mainstream societies. This morning I awoke to this, all too common question, posted on my facebook page. Please see below the question and our response:
Why is a white kid wearing a aboriginal shirt? Posted 10 hours ago via Facebook
Looks based on stereotypes can be very deceiving.
This ‘white kid’ wearing an ‘aboriginal shirt’ is in fact a proud young Eastern Aranda, Luritja, Ngarrindjeri and Barngala warrior who also happens to be a product of the Stolen Generations.
Identity is one of the main issues that comes under attack when Lateral Violence is left to continue the negative perpetuations of the past colonisation policies and principles. Aboriginality is not defined by the colour of our skin.
Lets hope that through sharing and caring during the ‘Decade of Lateral Love around the World 2012 – 2022′ we can ALL pave the way for strong young warriors like ours, to not have to contend with the identity issue we continue to face today.
